Battle leads PSU to 82-51 win over Slippery Rock

Friday, November 06, 2009

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) Talor Battle started off the new season the same way he ended the last one leading the way for the Nittany Lions in a victory.

The junior guard had 16 points and 10 rebounds Friday night, leading Penn State to an 82-51 exhibition victory over Division II Slippery Rock.

''We took care of business and put the game out of reach right from the get-go,'' said Battle, who said he played with an upset stomach.

Chris Babb added 12 points and Sasa Borovnjak 10 for the Nittany Lions, who were playing their first game since capturing their first NIT title last spring.

Borovnjak is one of four newcomers to the Nittany Lions roster who will be counted on to help fill the void left by the departure of forward Jamelle Cornley and guards Stanley Pringle and Danny Morrissey.

''The younger guys saw the tone we tried to set when we were in there,'' center Andrew Jones said. ''We told the guys to go out and try to set the tone, and they did that. They kept that same energy, focus.''

Michael Evans Jr. scored 20 points to lead Slippery Rock. Evans is in his first season at the school after a redshirt season at Morehead State last year and playing at junior college the previous season.

Slippery Rock was slowed by 22 fouls, with five players whistled for three or more.

Penn State capitalized on Slippery Rock's mistakes and shot 15-for-23 from the line.

''We were taking this thing seriously and that got our attention,'' Penn State coach Ed DeChellis said. ''We didn't want to stub our foot.''

Battle's slam dunk gave Penn State a 19-0 lead four minutes in, riling up fans who were also at the Jordan Center for a pep rally leading up to Saturday's football showdown against Ohio State.

The size of the crowd was the first thing Battle noticed when he ran onto the court.

''I remember two years ago when we played Slippery Rock my freshman year, there were maybe a fourth of the people there,'' Battle said. ''That's what winning does and I was happy with the support that was out there tonight and hopefully we can keep bringing them back.'' Slippery Rock didn't score until the 15-minute mark of the first half, and trailed 46-23 at the break. Penn State, coming off a team-best 27 wins, settled in quickly with three returning starters from last season. Battle, a preseason All-Big Ten selection, is expected to be the Nittany Lions' leader on the court. Maron Brown added eight points and eight rebounds for Slippery Rock. Their coach Kevin Reynolds, was not available in the media room after the game.
